Chargemasters: Strategies to Ensure Accurate Reimbursement and Compliance is an up-to-date comprehensive guide to the appropriate use of this critical revenue tool. This book and CD-ROM set shows readers how to develop:

  • processes to systematically review the chargemaster for reimbursement optimization
  • policies and procedures that ensure proper coding, billing, and claims submission
  • interfaces between appropriate departmental service lines to ensure appropriate charge capture for proper reimbursement

This resource also provides hands-on advice to help readers understand the pricing process, cost accounting, Medicare's charging rule, any compliance issues, and the associated billing and claim processes.

Your chargemaster is more than a line-by-line list of procedures and supplies and the corresponding values that are dropped into patients' bills. It is a complex computer file programmed to capture charges, assign appropriate pricing, interface your coding and billing functions, ensure every bill meets every compliance standard, cull and separate cost data for reporting purposes - and do it all in an environment of consistently changing regulations, codes, and costs.

Your copy of Chargemasters comes with a CD-ROM loaded with support files and associated information to turn your chargemaster files into useful reporting and revenue enhancement tools. You'll get an updated CD-ROM annually, with emphasis on Medicare's payment systems and processes you need to follow for appropriate reimbursement.

Your chargemaster might just be the most valuable member of your reimbursement and compliance team. This resource is for both seasoned and unseasoned staff. Who should read Chargemasters?

  • Chargemaster coordinators and other personnel involved with developing and maintaining a hospital's or hospital system's chargemaster
  • Chief financial officers, controllers, patient financial services, and business office staff
  • HIM staff, including coders and billers
  • Revenue enhancement and finance staff involved in cost accounting, charge capture, cost report preparation, strategic pricing, financial analysis, and assessment
  • Compliance and internal auditing staff involved in the coding, billing, and reimbursement cycle
  • Students of healthcare finance in the hospital arena

Duane C. Abbey, PhD, CFP, is president of Abbey & Abbey Consultants, Inc., of Ames, IA. He provides specialized consultation for revenue enhancement; compliance reviews for physicians, clinics, hospitals, and hospital systems; and litigation support services to legal counsel for healthcare providers. Please remember that the government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
