This is the AMA's definitive authority on medical professionalism.

For more than 155 years, the AMA Code of Medical Ethics has been considered the most comprehensive ethics guide for physicians, covering a wide range of issues related to the patient-physician relationship, such as confidentiality and end-of-life care. It also addresses social policy issues that affect medical practice matters such as medical records, fees and charges, professional rights, and more. The Code was first developed in 1847 and undergoes regular revisions.

This edition features more than 200 ethical opinions of the AMA's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs. Includes clarification of opinions on gifts to physicians from industry and sales of goods from physician's offices. Among the new opinions in this edition are those on conflicts of interest in research, the use of genetic information, and surrogate decision making. Several opinions are included on topics such as physician health and wellness, physician obligation in disaster preparedness and response, direct-to-consumer diagnostic imaging tests, and resident physicians' involvement in patient care. New guidance is given on previous topics such as transplantation of organs from living donors, racial and ethnic health care disparities, and medical testimony.

These opinions, and the principles upon which they are founded, have been cited in many of the important medico-legal decisions of our time including Cruzan and Roe v. Wade. References to case law and journal articles are annotated for research convenience throughout this edition. This authoritative resource for medical ethics includes the revised copy of the Principles of Medical Ethics.
