A great supplement to your Coding Companion, Code Pathways provides a quick-reference and time-saving tool to help you make fast and accurate decisions.

These specialty-specific, laminated flip charts provide guidance in choosing the appropriate procedure codes amongst the various options and scenarios. Simplify code selection with the help of decision trees mapping out the clinical information needed for proper procedure code selection based on the patient’s medical record. View sample pages here.

  • Specialty-specific decision trees. A series of quick-reference decision tools that steer you toward the right CPT code for procedures with complex coding issues.

  • Common ICD-9-CM codes. This resource identifies common ICD-9-CM codes that could be used to support medical necessity for the selected procedure code.

  • Detailed illustrations. Anatomic illustrations help you visualize the surgical area on which the procedure is being performed.

  • Clinical definitions. Clinical definitions associated with the surgical procedures clarify the differences between comparable CPT code descriptions.

  • User-friendly format. Durable, laminated, flip-chart format provides quick access to the coding information you need.

Start benefiting from 100+ years of combined experience and expertise. CPT is a registered trademark of the American Medical Association.

Karen Kachur, RN, CPC, is a technical editor for Ingenix with expertise in CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-9-CM coding, as well as physician billing, compliance, and fraud and abuse. Prior to joining Ingenix, she worked for many years as a staff RN in a variety of clinical settings, including medicine, surgery, intensive care, psychiatry, and geriatrics. In addition, she was the assistant director of a hospital utilization management and quality assurance department. She also has extensive experience as a nurse reviewer for Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Please remember: The government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
