This unique workbook features coding exercises referencing each section of the current annual CPT-4 and ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS Level II coding manuals.

With interactive exercises focusing on condition and procedure statements, readers will expand their medical vocabulary and enhance their coding skills for the physician's office.

Included in the workbook are the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines for diagnosis coding and reporting by physicians. Learners need current CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding manuals to complete the exercises. Benefits of this book include:

  • Annual updates keep workbook current with recent releases of revised CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding manuals

  • Helpful hints in CPT-4 exercises provide insights into the use of the manual to locate the correct codes

  • Includes CMS rules for diagnosis coding and reporting by physicians

  • Extensive exercises help learners develop skill and accuracy in using coding manuals

  • Sample exams for CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, and CPT-4 – HCPCS coding offer more than 80 testing items

The Coding Workbook is completely doctor-office based which is what we focus on in our program. The diagnostic and procedural statements are ones that the students will encounter once they are on internship or hired for a job. This is a great addition to the book that we currently use and would enhance the learning of our students!

This workbook contains coding exercises that reference sections of the CPT and ICD-9-CM coding manuals. Exercises requiring HCPCS Level II codes are also included in the workbook. Condition and procedure statements in the exercises reflect the current annual editions of the coding manuals. By completing the exercises, you will expand your medical vocabulary, improve coding skills for the physician's office, and learn to code only what the documentation supports. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines for diagnosis coding and reporting by physicians are also covered in the workbook. Learners need current CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding manuals to complete the exercises.

Alice Covell is a partner in Covell & Harwood Co., Kalamazoo, MI. They consult with physician practices and healthcare facilities on coding issues and office management. She also presents seminars on coding issues.

Please remember that the government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
