These CD-ROMs provide you with accurate and timely data to import into your billing and claims reporting system.

Keep your system up-to-date each year with the AMA's complete CPT Data Files on CD-ROM. The AMA complete CPT provide all of the official CPT codes along with each of the following:

  • short descriptions (contains the official CPT codes and the abbreviated procedural descriptions up to 28 characters per line; code descriptions are provided in uppercase only),

  • medium descriptions (each description is unique; contains the official CPT codes and the abbreviated, where necessary, procedural descriptions up to 100 characters per line; code descriptions are provided in uppercase only), and

  • long, full, unabbreviated descriptions (contains the official CPT codes and the full descriptions in both upper and lowercase)

These Data Files also include:

  • Official CPT codes for the current year

  • The short, abbreviated descriptions up to 28 characters in length; the medium, abbreviated descriptions up to 48 characters in length; and the full, unabbreviated descriptions CPT code modifiers from Appendix A of CPT

  • Full list of CPT code modifiers from Appendix A of CPT.

  • Complete text of the official CPT guidelines from each section of the CPT codebook.

  • Summary of additions, deletions, and revisions from Appendix B of CPT. Shows the actual changes made to the code descriptions.

  • Fixed-field and tab-delimited file formats.

The CPT Data Files are available in either ASCII only or EBCDIC only formats.

Please Note: Data Files are not software. There is no search application associated with these Data Files. Check with your data professional to ensure compatibility with your existing billing and claims reporting system. These Data Files are used to import up-to-date codes and descriptors into your own billing, medical records or claims software. The AMA has deliberately not included programs with these text files, as each user has different needs. The text files may be used with any software that allows use of an ASCII and/or EBCDIC (CPT Data File) file.  To open the .TXT files, you must first launch a database, spreadsheet, or other application, and then use the file open and/or file export functions within the software.

System Requirements:

  • IBM or compatible

  • Windows® or PC DOS – 256K

  • CD-ROM Drive

Please remember: The government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
