"The (authors) have developed a comprehensive, easy-to-read 'how to' for physicians making the change from a paper-based system of health care records to an electronic one. By helping doctors understand the financial, technical and workflow details involved in electronic health record implementation, their work stands as a highly significant contribution to the health care IT field overall." Janet M. Marchibroda, chief executive officer, eHealth Initiative, Washington, D.C.

MGMA, founded in 1926, is the nation’s principal voice for medical group practice. MGMA’s 19,000 members manage and lead more than 11,500 organizations in which more than 237,000 physicians practice. MGMA’s core purpose is to improve the effectiveness of medical group practices and the knowledge and skills of the individuals who manage and lead them. MGMA headquarters are in Englewood, Colorado.

Margret Amatayakul is president of a firm dedicated to providing effective and efficient solutions to today’s information management and systems issues. She is co-founder of Health IT Certification. She has an extensive history of working in the field of electronic health records (EHR) and associated standards, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Margret is a widely acclaimed speaker and has published extensively, having several regular columns in health care trade magazines. She has written books on HIPAA, EHR, finance concepts for health professionals, and work flow and process improvement.

Steven S. Lazarus is president and co-founder of Boundary Information Group (BIG), a consortium of health care information and technology consulting firms using their collective experience and knowledge to address the information needs of the health care community. He consults on EHR, system strategic planning, revenue cycle and work flow improvement, and HIPAA compliance. His clients include physician practices, hospitals, insurance companies, vendors, government (federal, state and local) and national associations.

Please remember that the government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
