Ethical Governance in Health Care helps boards of trustees and CEOs navigate their leadership roles in response to the changing legal, moral, and ethical climate in health care organizations. This book is both:

  • a board leadership guide for building an ethical culture, and,
  • a how-to reference that provides practical help for establishing effective, accountable governance within an ethical framework.

This book helps you and your health care organization restore the high ethical values and public confidence health care institutions have traditionally enjoyed. Ethical Governance guides boards to actively define their roles, functions, power, and processes. It is organized in easy-to-read chapters with suggestions on how to create decision-making environments and processes that help avoid ethical conflicts. The book presents an overview of the major frameworks for ethical analysis so board members will be able to explain and justify the appropriate frameworks when they confront moral and ethical dilemmas.

“An effective guide for the development of boards, a useful orientation tool for new board members, and an invaluable resource for ongoing education and self-evaluation.“ Sr. Mary Roch Rocklage, RSM, Chair, Sponsor Council, Sisters of Mercy Health System, St. Louis, MO; Past Chairperson, Board of Trustees, AHA

It defines the difference between the legal environment and a facility’s ethical climate and helps trustees translate their organization’s identity, values, and vision and reconcile past commitments with present plans and future actions. It provides practical direction on building and maintaining trust among the community, staff, vendors, public regulators, and accreditation agencies. It also details how the organizational community needs to understand the importance of moral choices and provides suggestions on "moral filter" self-awareness.

Recommended by the American Hospital Association, this book is about real world ethical decisions. Ethical Governance focuses on responding to issues (e.g., conflicts of interest) that challenge most organizations. It provides guidance so actual and perceived ethical conflicts can be managed so they do not contribute to suspicion and lack of trust. It is filled with contemporary case studies that explore how boards might respond to moral challenges where societal expectations may differ from an institution’s legal, clinical, or business decisions, such as:

  • rationing patient care
  • allocating costs
  • reusing "single use only" equipment
  • upgrading technology
  • evaluating CEO performance

"The boards of most not-for-profit health care organizations are struggling with how their organizations are fulfilling their missions while dealing with the economic challenges of today's real world. This book provides pragmatic guidance..." Dan C. Coleman, President and CEO, John C. Lincoln Health Network, Phoenix, AZ

“Deciding to do the ‘right thing’ in the face of multiple options is hard enough for any individual, but when complex ethical choices come before a hospital board, the ‘right thing’ is often confounded by resource limitations, principled differences among trustees, or social and religious values. This book presents a masterfully direct guide to the internal workings of ethical decision making in the boardroom.” David J. Nygren, Ph.D., Corporate Governance Group Leader, Partner, Mercer Delta Consulting

“Indispensable! Insightful and pithy, it provides excellent suggestions for establishing solid ethical practices within any health care organization. Hospital executives, administrators and trustees will find the book to be a welcome companion.” Dr. Robert J. Parsons, Chairman, Urban South Region Board of Trustees, Intermountain Health Care, Provo, UT
