This clearly written book provides a comprehensive introduction to the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in analyzing and addressing public health problems.

The book lays a solid foundation in GIS, guides the reader through basic concepts and methods, emphasizes practical applications, and demonstrates how to implement core data analysis techniques. Described are ways that GIS can be used to map health events, identify disease clusters, investigate environmental health problems, and understand the spread of communicable and vector-borne infectious disease. Also covered are strategies for assessing patterns of health services delivery and assisting community groups in identifying local health issues.

Each chapter includes numerous tables, figures, and concrete examples, as well as useful references and Internet resources.

Topics fully covered include:

  • Geographic Information Systems

  • Spatial Data

  • Spatial Databases for Public Health

  • Mapping Health Information

  • Analyzing Spatial Clustering of Health Events

  • Analyzing Environmental Hazards

  • Analyzing the Risk and Spread of Infectious Diseases

  • Exploring the Ecology of Vector-Borne Disease

  • Analyzing Access to Health Services

  • Locating Health Services

  • GIS and Community Health

"...it is perhaps surprising that, until now, no one has written a volume on geographic information systems (GIS) and public health. It is all the more surprising, given that the number of research papers in epidemiology and public health that have made use of GIS has also mushroomed over the past 10 years. At last, we have a substantial text that brings together some of these applications, while offering a solid background in the concepts and principles needed to develop such applications in a rigorous and plausible way. Moreover, it is a text that is comprehensive, well-structured, well-illustrated, and well-written....The book will be a useful adjunct to generic graduate courses in GIS, for which instructors will find a wealth of illustrative examples of applications that will surely be more motivating than many others. It will attract a wide readership among epidemiologists and public health professionals who are beginning to recognize the value of a spatial analytic perspective in helping understand, explain, and perhaps predict the distribution of health problems and disease. In this, Cromley and McLafferty serve their audience well; it is good to see a pair of geographers producing this text, rather than epidemiologists. The best compliment a reviewer can pay is to say: 'I wish I had written it myself.' Indeed, I do."--Economic Geography

"The book introduces key GIS concepts, mapping health information, analysis of spatial clustering of health events, environmental hazards, spread of infectious diseases, and health services; there is also a very informative chapter on GIS and community health, a subject not well represented in the research literature. Additionally, the figures and tables are very illustrative of the material and greatly aid in understanding the concepts conveyed in the book."--Choice

Ellen K. Cromley, PhD, is Professor of Geography at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut, and is affiliated with the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, Connecticut. Her research is primarily concerned with geographical patterns of health and disease, health facility location, and GIS design to support public health surveillance and intervention programs. She has published in geography, epidemiology, public health, and health services journals. Sara L. McLafferty, PhD, is Professor of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana/n-/Champaign, Urbana, Illinois. Her research explores the use of spatial analysis methods and GIS for health and social issues in cities, as well as gender and racial disparities in geographical access to services and employment opportunities. She has published in geography, epidemiology, and urban studies journals and serves on the editorial boards of Economic Geography and Health and Place.

"I can think of no better geographers than Ellen Cromley and Sara McLafferty for presenting the methodologies and research findings of GIS for health. GIS in Public Health is a comprehensive compendium, including an introduction to GIS, spatial data, spatial databases, and mapping health information, as well as applications of GIS to the analysis of the spatial clustering of health events, environmental hazards, risk and spread of infectious diseases, the ecology of vector-borne diseases, and access to an location of health services."--The Geographical Review

"No other book provides such a thorough introduction to GIS technologies, data, and methods of analysis, while focusing explicitly on issues and applications salient to public health practitioners, medical geographers, and epidemiologists. Cromley and McLafferty expertly balance the applied and the academic, the conceptual and the technical. Their writing is clear, concise, and practical. This book deserves to be widely read by both experienced and potential users of GIS in public health, as well as social and behavioral scientists who encounter geospatial data in their work. It will serve as an excellent text in advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses." --Stephen A. Matthews, Population Research Institute, The Pennsylvania State University
