This compliance guide is designed to help you:

  • Meet JCAHO's new Periodic Performance Review requirement
  • Conduct a thorough compliance self-assessment
  • Implement effective plans of action
  • Record compliance plans
  • Achieve continuous survey readiness

The JCAHO's periodic performance review (PPR) requirement is now in full swing. Your organization must prove its continuous survey readiness. Deciding to complete the full PPR or choosing a PPR option is an important decision. Once you tell the JCAHO which option your facility will use, there's no turning back - you must fulfill your assessment using that option. Once you submit your results to JCAHO, the information you provide will be used to evaluate your organization during your next survey.

That's where this book and companion CD-ROM How to Complete the JCAHO's Periodic Performance Review can help. This tool walks you step by step through the JCAHO's new self-assessment process. You will be guided on conducting a self-assessment, creating appropriate plans of action, and measuring your progress to ensure compliance. You will be shown how to record your compliance plans and how to track your own progress from year to year. The sample documents you receive include:

  • sample completed self assessment tool
  • survey coordination tools
  • periodic performance review tools
  • sample corrective action plans
  • a master-planning calendar to help you conduct your assessment
  • and more

Armed with the resources, tools, and advice, you and your survey committee will be able to:

  • Evaluate and select the most appropriate PPR option for your organization
  • Illustrate each PPR option to your decision-makers using the presentation tools provided
  • Conduct compliance assessments
  • Analyze the results of your self-assessment to identify problematic areas
  • Design and implement measurable plans of action to improve any problem areas you discover in your assessment
  • Measure and document the results of your plans of action
  • Understand the JCAHO's scoring guidelines and find out where your facility stands by calculating your Measures of Success

The CD-ROM that comes with this book also gives you the tools for a mock PPR. It provides 41 compliance assessment tools: one tool for each of the functional chapters of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals, Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, and Laboratory and Point-of-Care testing. Plus, one tool for each setting that covers the National Patient Safety Goals. These compliance tools are found in the following categories:

  • The number and content of each JCAHO Standard
  • Element of Performance
  • Responsible Party
  • Evidence of Compliance
  • Measurement Results
  • Compliance Rank
  • Evaluation methodology and frequency
  • Follow-up (depending on compliance)

To help create a culture of continuous compliance, you can also ask your managers to complete the assessment sheets - the forms you need are available on the CD-ROM, ready and waiting to be printed and distributed. Once the managers have completed the assessment sheets, you can collect their data, analyze the results, and upload the information to the JCAHO's PPR extranet site. By using this tool to perform regular self-assessments, you will be one step closer to continuous compliance. Over time, you and your staff will become as familiar with the standards, their interpretation, and elements of performance as your JCAHO surveyor is. That is the goal.
