For over 30 years, this leading book has helped readers learn how to submit, trace, appeal, and transmit claims for the full range of today's health plans. Its comprehensive coverage also includes important information on:

  • diagnostic coding

  • procedural coding

  • submitting, tracing, appealing, and transmitting claims

  • office and insurance collection strategies

  • Medicare

  • managed care

  • and more

The goal of this extremely up-to-date text is to increase efficiency and streamline administrative procedures for the most exasperating aspect of the doctor's office routine - insurance billing. The new edition has been reviewed by industry experts and carefully updated to reflect recent changes in the industry - including the addition of special HIPAA Compliance Alerts throughout the book to help readers comply with governmental privacy regulations. This edition helps you keep pace with industry changes, featuring the latest information on HIPAA regulations, diagnostic coding, procedural coding, office and insurance collection strategies, Medicare, and more.

  • Procedural (CPT and HCPCS) and diagnostic (ICD-9-CM) coding and documentation are emphasized, since they are the keystones to obtaining maximum reimbursement.

  • Key terms are bolded at first mention, explained within the context of the discussion, and defined in the glossary.

  • Separate chapters on Electronic Data Interchange and HIPAA Compliance and Privacy in Insurance Billing provide essential knowledge of electronic claims filing, informing you of submission guidelines used in the majority of medical offices today.

  • Icons clearly identify each insurance payer with a specific color and graphic, making specific information easy to locate.

  • Compliance features located at appropriate points throughout most chapters offer tips to ensure compliance with correct billing and coding practice, particularly HIPAA and OIG.

  • A separate chapter on documentation in the medical office describes how proper documentation can prevent penalties and refund requests, and help you prove compliance in the case of an audit or review.

  • Detailed examples and samples of completed insurance forms show you how to apply knowledge in the real world.

  • Emphasis on the business of running a medical office highlights the importance of the medical insurance specialist's role in filing clean claims, solving problems that do occur, and collecting overdue payments.

  • Service to Patient feature throughout the chapters focuses on ways to provide quality service to the patient as well as your co-workers.

An accompanying CD-ROM lets you practice "real world" billing with patient simulations using Altapoint and the Student Software Challenge.

This is a Brandon Hill Allied Health book selection

About the Virtual Medical Office: Gain realistic experience in a physician's office without leaving the classroom! By using Elsevier's Virtual Medical Office learning system an Elsevier textbook, a study guide, and interactive software students will develop critical thinking and decision-making skills they'll need on the job. Each study guide lesson directs the student through the textbook and software and presents exercises offering practice in coding procedures and diagnoses, filing insurance claims, troubleshooting rejected claims, catching common coding errors, evaluating the office's compliance with HIPAA, keeping the policy manual up to date, and much more. These exercises in combination with a simulated medical practice bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.

About the workbook: It is an essential learning resource that will enhance and improve your study of Fordney's Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office. The workbook conveniently parallels material in the text, and provides realistic, hands-on exercises that help you apply concepts and develop important critical-thinking skills.

The books, workbook and CD-ROM package: This money-saving package includes Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office - Text, Workbook and Software for Virtual Medical Office.

This book features color-coded payer icons to help clarify information specific to different payers, block-by-block explanations and examples of the correct way to complete the claim form, samples of completed forms, a CD containing 10 scored patient case studies and a quick guide to HIPAA. Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office is a key text for Medical Administrative Assisting, Medical Front Office programs, or those who wish to become insurance billing specialists, claims assistance professionals, or electronic claims processors for physicians' practices and hospital outpatient clinics. Those already practicing in this area will also find this text beneficial, as will health claims examiner programs.

Marilyn Fordney, CMA-AC, CMT, formerly, Instructor of Medical Insurance, Medical Terminology, Medical Machine Transcription, and Medical Office Procedures, Ventura College, Ventura, CA (information from the publisher).

Please remember that the government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
