In the rapidly expanding health care industry, experienced, dedicated health care professionals are a scarce resource. Knowing how to manage your staff - keeping in mind their unique needs as professionals - is critical to retaining employees and keeping your operations running smoothly.

Managing the Health Care Professional goes beyond standard management theory to give you a clear picture of the characteristics that make professionals unique as employees and thus deserving of treatment that addresses their professionalism.

This is an excellent book to purchase in quantity for developing the management skills of an entire management team or mentoring supervisors. Topics fully covered in this book include:

  • The Professional Defined: Traditionally, Legally, and Practically

  • Professional Employees in the Health Care Organization

  • The Professional and the Nonprofessional: Where is the Line?

  • Professional Behavior and Professional Treatment

  • Professional Mobility: Up, Across, or Out?

  • Motivation and the Professional

  • Appraising the Professional's Performance

  • Day-to-Day Management of the Professional Employee

  • The Professional as a Manager

  • Unionization and the Professional Employee

  • Cases: Managing the Health Care Professional

This practical, results-oriented, how-to guide identifies specific points of departure in how professionals approach the job, how they relate to their organization and its objectives, and how they respond to a manager’s leadership, and other aspects that make them unique.

"Managing the Health Care Professional provide[s] a practical guide for supervisors, middle managers or department heads who direct the activities of health care professions and…a learning tool for health care professional students. Recommended for hospital, medical, or health care institution libraries, managers, academic libraries with health related curriculum, and as a supplementary text." - Eileen Heaser, Reference Librarian, California State University at Sacramento

“Intended as a guide for first-line supervisors, middle managers, and department heads who direct the activities of health care professionals, this book explains what makes these professionals unique as employees and addresses differences in how professional employees approach their jobs, how they relate to their organization and its objectives, and how they respond to a manager's leadership. The author has written previous books on health care supervision.” -Book News
