MGMA Ambulatory Surgery Center Performance Survey
Medical Group Management Association

Please note: When purchasing MGMA annual surveys, please pay attention to the publication dates. MGMA normally collects data from one year, names the survey for the following year, and publishes the data midway through, or at the end of the third year. Therefore, for example, a 2005 survey, based on 2004 data, but published in late 2005 will be useable throughout 2006, a 2006 survey published in late 2006 will be useable through 2007, and so on. The following surveys are the most current surveys available at this time.

Lead your ASC to success with industry leading benchmarking data.

Where does your center stand? MGMA has collaborated with the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (AAASC) to bring you comprehensive financial and operational data on well over 150 ASCs. MGMA has put this essential data together for you:

  • A/R data: More than 160 ASCs with accounts receivable information
  • Cost data:
    • by ownership type -
      • physician-owned vs. majority joint-venture ownership
      • entity-owned vs. majority joint-venture ownership
    • for operating-cost categories,
      • per square foot,
      • per case, per 1,000 cases,
      • per case,
      • per procedure,
      • per operating room and
      • by percent of total medical revenue
  • Complete data for multi-specialty and single-specialty practices, including breakouts for gastroenterology, ophthalmology, and orthopedic surgery

Additional comparisons and data include accounts receivable information; costs per square foot, per case, per procedure, per operating room and more; and complete data for both multispecialty and single-specialty practices.

Through detailed analysis, you can hone strategic plans, highlight possible problem areas and address cost and revenue sources to maximize your bottom line. You will find frequent uses for this information, including when you:

  • Develop models and make informed assumptions
  • Construct strategic planning
  • Benchmark your costs against similar ASCs
  • Perform detailed comparisons to highlight possible problem areas in your surgery center
  • Assess how cost structures affect ASC revenue
  • Enhance your bottom line by examining cost and revenue sources
  • Assist managers and physicians in analysis and planning
  • Contribute to facility-wide quality improvement processes

The American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (AAASC) is the national association dedicated to advancing high quality, physician led and patient centered care in ambulatory surgery centers. AAASC supports medical, clinical and administrative professionals who deliver efficient, high quality, and cost effective patient centered outcomes through ambulatory surgery centers. AAASC’s Data Collection seeks to provide standardized, quantifiable metrics for the ASC industry. The aim of data collection is to discern how and why higher quality care is delivered with higher cost effectiveness than competing alternatives and with sufficient return on investment to fund growth and continuous improvement. AAASC has established a database of meaningful information which includes key industry data elements that are consistently applied. Data Collection has achieved critical mass so that it delivers statistically viable information to help members better manage their centers and achieve better patient outcomes and to support AAASC advocacy, education and payor relations. Data collection efforts are adequately supported to ensure that the technological infrastructure, expert analysis and business intelligence initiatives are sustained.

Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), founded in 1926, is the nation’s principal voice for medical group practice. MGMA’s 19,000 members manage and lead more than 11,500 organizations in which more than 237,000 physicians practice. MGMA’s core purpose is to improve the effectiveness of medical group practices and the knowledge and skills of the individuals who manage and lead them. MGMA headquarters are in Englewood, Colorado.
