It's now no longer a question of whether health care outcomes and selected processes will be measured and the findings published for public access - it's a question of when.

The JCAHO has revamped its PI standards - specifically around ORYX, FMEA, and core measures. In addition to keeping PI and quality of care a main focus of its survey process, the JCAHO has added patient safety as a critical area. In response, this updated edition of your guide includes a patient safety chapter and an educational PowerPoint presentation on CD-ROM.

This kit will provide you with step-by-step tools, advice, and a completely new section that focuses on the JCAHO's Patient Safety Goals. Unlike most PI resources, you'll receive hands-on compliance advice on both performance improvement and the JCAHO requirements-allowing you to ensure your facility is ready for survey day. With this resource kit, you'll receive:

  • Pre-survey Checklists to help you save time including:

    • Accreditation Requirements for PI Checklist

    • Core Performance Measures Checklist

    • Sentinel Events Checklists, and

    • National Patient Safety Goals Checklist.

  • Dozens of sample forms that clarify complex concepts and serve as models for your PI program including a Summary of Required Measures form

  • Clear, concise, and thorough explanations of how to comply with the JCAHO's latest PI standards and how to prepare for survey

  • Best-practice strategies on how to garner hospital-wide support and participation in your PI efforts

The National Association for Healthcare Quality awarded its annual David L. Stumph Award for Excellence in Publication to the second edition of this book. The award honors and encourages participation in the pursuit of education in the field of healthcare quality management and seeks to reinforce positive contributions to the field through literary distinction.

For this third edition, the authors have updated and improved upon the advice and examples provided in the first and second editions, and added several new, cutting-edge sections and examples. As with the first edition and second edition, this third edition of Performance Improvement has enabled us to combine our experience and interest in healthcare quality with our enthusiasm for publishing useful, hands-on information that helps you save time.
