Step-by-Step Medical Coding takes a practical approach to learning medical coding.

It begins with an introduction to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), followed by in-depth explanations of the sections found in the CPT manual. Several chapters, organized to follow the CPT codes by body system, introduce various procedures and demonstrate how to code each one. Practice exercises following each step of information and at the end of each unit reinforce important concepts and allow users to check their comprehension. Unit 2 covers the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD 9-CM), and Unit 3 offers information about third party reimbursement. An appendix provides the official ICD-9-CM guidelines for coding and reporting.

This book is for teaching ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems, used in report diagnoses and procedures for patients treated in a wide variety of healthcare settings. The purpose is to teach ICD-9-CM and CPT clinical coding.

The major emphasis of this book is on the CPT procedure coding system, to which five chapters are devoted. Two chapters are devoted to ICD-9-CM coding, and one chapter addresses third party reimbursement issues. Each chapter contains numerous exercises. New to this Edition:

  • A new full-color design makes the book more visually stimulating and makes it easier to identify key content.

  • Appendix D, Quick Guide to HIPAA for the Physician’s Office, provides important information about new HIPAA guidelines.

  • New illustrations enhance the quality of the text and clarify the most important coding concepts.

  • This best-selling textbook now publishes annually, to insure it contains the most up-to-date coding information.

About the Workbook: Original source documents provide real-world experience to prepare for employers' expectations and to practice with actual medical record documentation. The workbook provides more than 1,000 questions and terminology exercises, as well as over 80 original source documents.

About the E-book Package: It includes Step-by-Step Medical Coding in regular book form along with an electronic version on CD-ROM of the textbook that allows students to search, highlight information, take notes, share notes and more. This package makes it simple for students to make the most of their study time and get more use out of their textbooks!

About the Virtual Office: Gain realistic experience in a physician's office without leaving the classroom! By using Virtual Medical Office learning system – an Elsevier textbook, a study guide, and interactive software – students will develop critical thinking and decision-making skills they'll need on the job. Each study guide lesson directs the student through the textbook and software and presents exercises offering practice in coding procedures and diagnoses, filing insurance claims, troubleshooting rejected claims, catching common coding errors, evaluating the office's compliance with HIPAA, keeping the policy manual up to date, and much more. These exercises – in combination with a simulated medical practice – bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.

Please remember: The government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st. In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the implementation dates. The best way to do this is to order your code books early. Review current coding resources.
