This is a survey preparation guide. If you are preparing for a standard CMS survey or a validation survey, you need resources with which to plan.

Whether you're JCAHO-accredited, not accredited, or looking to switch from JCAHO accreditation to CMS surveys, you will benefit from this resource. You may also need to understand the CMS Hospital Conditions of Participation for solid reimbursement procedures. This book provides you with:

  • an easy-to-read overview of the CMS survey process

  • a thorough explanation of the types of CMS surveys and how the Conditions of Participation (COP) for Medicare are applied

  • an update on the latest federal guidelines

  • step-by-step compliance tips for each COP including exactly what processes and policies you should have in place to comply

  • a detailed look at the differences between accredited hospital surveys and non-accredited surveys

  • in-depth analyses of CMS surveys for inpatient and ambulatory facilities

The CMS Survey Guide provides real-life compliance tips prepared by a former contracted CMS surveyor. As such, you will have a better understanding of what surveyors are looking for and a clear understanding of the CMS survey process itself. Jeffrey T. Coleman worked for the New York state Department of Health as a surveyor for 28 years, retiring in 2004. He was assistant program director for hospital and primary care services in the western region of New York, covering 17 counties. He was responsible for the eight-county Buffalo office, establishing and running federal and state surveys in all types of facilities, including 31 hospitals. Jeff also assumed oversight and survey responsibilities for 60 diagnostic and treatment centers, which include ambulatory surgery centers, primary care clinics, renal dialysis centers, speech and hearing centers, and eight local health departments.
