This valuable tool provides new tips and expert insight on perennial obstacles and presents a comprehensive approach to the myriad of challenges and developments that you need to address in your facility.

The Hospital Safety Director's Handbook is the complete guide to help you stay prepared in your evolving role. You have the ideal training resource and quick reference guide for safety directors.

It covers all the duties, including those related to risk management, building and budgeting for a safety program, and staff education and training. This book and CD-ROM set also covers core Joint Commission–related responsibilities such as management of the physical environment, emergency management, life safety, security, medical equipment, and more.

Not a basic compliance manual, this popular handbook offers a scalable walk-through of a hospital’s safety program from soup to nuts—it will help new and experienced safety professionals take a proactive approach to their safety programs, as well as deal with problems as they arise.

You know that as a hospital safety director, your role is constantly expanding and evolving. Besides meeting everyday challenges and accomplishing long-term goals, you must also prepare for the unexpected. Now more than ever, you need to stay ahead of regulators such as OSHA and the JCAHO; plan for potential bioterror events and disease outbreaks; oversee construction projects, including training crews on the safety procedures in your facility; and above all, protect your patients, staff, and visitors.

You need concrete information, practical tips, and straightforward explanations of just how to tackle these issues. The Hospital Safety Director's Handbook is available in this expanded, comprehensive second edition. Using expert advice, sample policies and procedures, and checklists, you will work more efficiently and be better prepared and equipped to handle any safety issue. This easy-to-use reference guide and cover-to-cover training resource will help you:

  • Understand the standards changes, including emphasis on life safety and emergency management

  • Prepare for surveyors' questions about your safety program

  • Learn from the real-world challenges faced by your peers in the field

  • Grasp topic-driven analysis of all safety-related concepts

  • Deal with safety-related staff competency requirements that used to belong to HR

  • Improve communication and training on safety topics for hospital staff, including safety-related staff competency requirements from The Joint Commission

  • Focus on current hot spots, including 96-hour rule, emergency preparedness, recent Sentinel Event Alerts, and more

  • Integrate building safety and patient safety, including relevant National Patient Safety Goals

  • Use risk assessment as a core measure of planning, growth, and continuity of operations

  • Know the safety director's role during construction and renovation projects

  • Comply with Interim Life Safety Measures

  • Implement better risk assessment processes

  • Easily find related organization resources

You’re now grappling with meeting new drill expectations, conducting emergency generator testing, and conducting the ILSM. To bring you up to speed on the most current issues you face, this book has added seven chapters and expanded ones from the first edition to bring you the most up-to-date information:

  • The Hospital Safety professional

  • Managing risks in healthcare

  • Setting up and organizing your program
