Perfect for potential research subjects, physicians, nurses, research scientists, study personnel, hospital administrators, and IRB staff and members!

This DVD introduces the concept of "truly informed consent" in research to underline the importance of the research participant's understanding of the risks and benefits (if any) of the research study they are volunteering for.

A "film-within-a-film" insert provides an informative interlude, thus stimulating and maintaining the learner's attention. Produced as part of a completed federal grant awarded by NIH / NCRFR to Friends Research Institute, Inc., the video has an authentic consent enactment, using a diverse, multi-ethnic and gender cast. What to Know About Informed Consent is a pleasant but thorough introduction to a topic that might otherwise be dry and boring.

Use this DVD for introducing prospective participants to the research consent process, and for staff training and orientation!

Friends Research Institute, Inc. (FRI, Inc.) was established in 1955 by a group of Maryland citizens who were colleagues and friends. They saw the need for a small and nimble non-profit organization able to help scientists obtain and manage grants, thus allowing the researcher to concentrate on the science, while FRI took over the "red tape" and "back office" functions. Today, FRI provides these services in 22 states and overseas, at very modest overhead rates. This ensures that private and public dollars go to research, not institutional overhead. and it gives the researcher more money for research. Over the decades FRI has attracted outstanding scientists while remaining very attractive to early career as well as late career investigators who wish to affiliate with a free-standing research organization like FRI.

FRI also conducts its own research at its Social Research Center in Baltimore, and provides clinical care for substance abuse clients at various sites throughout the Baltimore Metro area. Additionally, FRI has its own IRB and provides human protections and IRB services for others, as well as producing educational conferences, seminars, and videos in bioethics and human research subjects protections. FRI is a secular, nonprofit 501(c) (3) corporation with main offices in suburban and downtown Baltimore and branch offices in Los Angeles and Florida.

FRI is ACCME©-accredited as a CME provider for AMA Category I Physician's Recognition Award.
