Here are some good ways that you can help the victims of Hurricane Katrina

Hundreds of communities are flattened in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Hurricane Katrina has left thousands of people homeless, hungry, unemployed, stranded, without adequate medical care, distraught, and grieving. We have created a contact list for you here. We believe that these organizations have already made a big difference - and will continue to have the greatest impact - in offering real help to these hurricane victims. Please join with us by contributing whatever you feel that you can.

Please begin by choosing the type of donation you are considering:

 
 

To give cash donations:

The following organizations are accepting donations by telephone, postal mail, or internet:

  • ACORN Hurricane Recovery Fund (ACORN, with headquarters in New Orleans, needs funds to reopen its New Orleans office as soon as possible, to locate and assist displaced ACORN members, and, to continue its historical mission of servicing the housing and credit needs of low income citizens, to organize its efforts to see that low income neighborhoods and families get the help they need and a voice in decisions about rebuilding their neighborhoods), Hurricane Recovery and Rebuilding Fund, 739 8th Street SE, Washington, DC 20003, donations website

  • CDC Foundation: (Emergency Preparedness & Respond Fund provides public health teams and critical medical supplies to Katrina victims), (404) 653-0790 and ask for the Development Office, (888) 880-4232, donations website
  • Charity Hospital of Louisiana: (This not-for-profit 650-bed hospital in downtown New Orleans is the oldest operating hospital in American, founded in 1736. It remained open while flooded and surrounded by water after this hurricane. Along with its heroic, hungry, and beleaguered doctors and nurses, and without power, water, food, sleep, or outside relief of any kind, this hospital continued to provide acute medical care in New Orleans for days. The federal government did not begin evacuating patients until 6 days after the hospital had been flooded and lost its electric power.)   • Convoy of Hope: (this group mobilized very quickly with trucks of supplies for hurricane victims; they made no excuses, they just got rolling; very impressive) (417) 823-8998, donations website
  • Habitat for Humanity: (dedicated to assist Katrina's victims with new housing), (229) 924-6935, donations website
  • Humane Society of the United States: (their animal response teams work tirelessly to save animal victims of this hurricane), (202) 452-1100, donations website
  • Louisiana State University of Veterinary Medicine is managing a large scale pet rescue, pet boarding and pet medical care operation for pets belonging to victims of Katrina. LSUVM is coordinating the efforts of SPCA, LVMA and animal control workers. They have set up large pet refugee centers on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, the Expo Center in Gonzales, the Coliseum in Lafayette, the Civic Center in Alexandria and the Coliseum in Baton Rouge. They are transporting pets, housing them and feeding them, including dogs, cats, birds, and horses.   • Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (working to save the lives of animals stranded by the hurricane), (504) 944-7445, donations website
  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), has developed a Katrina disaster fund, (410) 521-4939, donations website

  • North Shore Animal League American: (this NY rescue organization has sent two teams to the Gulf of Mexico to assist in animal rescue), (877) 4SAVEPET, donations website
  • Northwest Medical Teams: (they ship emergency health supplies, dispatch mobile health vans, and send medical volunteers, more info here), 800-959-HEAL (4325), donations website
  • PETsMART Charities (working to provide disaster relief to pets after this hurricane), PETsMART Charities, 19601 N. 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85027, or visit your local PetsMart where donations are currently being accepted, donations website

To give free housing to displaced people:

The following websites have been set up to connect those offering free housing with victims that need shelter:

  • The Times-Picayune (New Orleans newspaper): nola.com (extremely credible site offering bulletin board postings)

  • Louisiana State University of Veterinary Medicine is managing a large scale pet rescue, pet boarding and pet medical care operation for pets belonging to victims of Katrina. LSUVM is coordinating the efforts of SPCA, LVMA and animal control workers. They have set up large pet refugee centers on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, the Expo Center in Gonzales, the Coliseum in Lafayette, the Civic Center in Alexandria and the Coliseum in Baton Rouge. If you live near one of these locations, they are accepting donated pet supplies such as large water containers, harnesses, canned pet food, litter boxes, cat litter, sheets, towels, water hoses, gloves, vet medical supplies, pooper scoopers, etc. (225) 925-3980 more info.
