The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) has a fresh new look and is the Number One publication dedicated to original work in research, research methods, and program evaluation in the field of public health.

This prestigious journal also regularly publishes authoritative editorials and commentaries and serves as a forum for the analysis of health policy. The stated mission of the Journal is "to advance public health research, policy, practice, and education." All published papers have undergone rigorous peer review (only one out of five submitted papers is accepted for publication).

Each month, the nation's most influential public health professionals turn to AJPH for the most current, authoritative, in-depth information in the field.

The goals of both the online and the print versions of the Journal, published monthly by the American Public Health Association (APHA), are

  • To publish the best scientific research in the field of public health
  • To serve as a forum for diverse viewpoints on major public health issues and policies
  • To promote awareness of models of practice in public health
  • To increase public and professional understanding of public health problems and their solutions through delivery channels relevant to different audiences and their needs

AJPH was first published in 1911. Authors contribute to AJPH their original unpublished research, social science analyses, scholarly essays, critical commentaries, and letters to the editor. Department submissions include

  • Health Policy and Ethics Forum--debates on public health issues
  • Field Action Reports--reports on practice-based programs and initiatives with potential to advance the public's health
  • Public Health Matters--articles featuring work in the social sciences and other disciplines
  • Faces of Public Health and Going Public--profiles of outstanding leaders and examples of vital public health work
  • Images of Public Health, Public Health Then and Now, and Voices From the Past--stories from public health history still relevant today

It is not necessary to be a member of APHA in order to subscribe to this Journal and benefit from this tremendous expertise. APHA represents more than 70 public health professions. Journal readers are administrators and planners (19%), educators and information specialists (13%), physicians (8%), epidemiologists (8%), nurses (6%), scientists (5%), consultants (5%). Others include researchers, dietitians, and environmentalists. They work in a variety of health care settings--30% in educational institutions, 28% in health agencies, associations, or organizations, 7% in clinics, 6% in health care facilities, 6% in research organizations, 5% in consulting firms, and 4% in government agencies other than health. The American Public Health Association (APHA) is the oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 50,000 members from over 50 occupations of public health.
