Healthcare Financial Management is written and edited principally for finance professionals in  hospitals and other health service organizations along the continuum of care.

It also is directed to professionals in law firms, accounting firms, banks, and consulting firms with an interest in healthcare finance. Healthcare Financial Management covers topics related to the practice of healthcare finance, such as:

  • strategic planning
  • accounting practices
  • leadership development
  • management issues
  • information systems
  • network development
  • legislative and regulatory issues
  • capital finance
  • cost management
  • patient financial services
  • capitation and risk sharing
  • restructuring, and
  • emerging financial trends

Articles published in HFM are directed toward the primary audience of chief financial officers, vice presidents of finance, controllers, patient financial services managers, business office managers, and other individuals responsible for all facets of the financial management of healthcare organizations - and HFM's secondary audience, including chief executive officers and other healthcare executives and administrators, lawyers, bankers, physician executives, accountants,  insurance company executives, leasing executives, and financial consultants with an interest or specialty in health care. Individuals concerned with capital financing in the healthcare field, such as public policymakers, also subscribe to HFM

Market trends are leading some acute care hospitals to examine their managed care payments and adopt a protective strategy: price shifting. General acute care hospitals’ revenues are under attack as inpatient and outpatient niche providers continue to sap profitable business. Although the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued a temporary moratorium on licensing new niche inpatient service providers, competition from existing competitors and those focused on outpatient areas—typically the hospital’s most profitable source of business—only grows.

HFMA brings perspective and clarity to the industry’s complex issues. HFMA is comprised of about 32,000 members employed by hospitals, integrated delivery systems, long-term and ambulatory care facilities, managed care organizations, medical group practices, public accounting and consulting firms, insurance companies, government agencies and other healthcare organizations. It is not necessary to be a member of HFMA to subscribe to Healthcare Financial Management and benefit from this tremendous expertise.
