Receive all the reimbursement your optometry practice rightfully deserves.

Please remember that the government no longer allows a grace period for annual code sets. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st.

Some of the topics printed in the past include:

  • 4 E/M documentation problems that will torpedo your claims – and how to fix them.

  • ICD-9 2006 update: describing specifics with new NPDR Dx codes in the 362.0 series; using dilated findings to determine code.

  • Has another patient postponed dilation? Coding experts reveal how you can get paid for every office visit.

  • Focus on bilateral status for solid OCB and A-scan billing; don't skip -26 and -TC rules; include both eyes in -TC; consider -26 inherently unilateral.

  • Coding gonioscopy separately from eye exam; bill for 92020 and 92012 together.

  • Proving necessity for large bifocal segs; documentation for V2219 and V2319; ICD-9 379.31, 743.35 and V43.1 acceptable diagnoses; billing V2219 or V2319 in addition to basic lens, etc.

  • Management techniques you can apply today to make your billing department more efficient.

  • Relying on 99341-99350 for OD house calls, depending on current or new patient.

  • Avoid this fraud: documenting E/M late and back dating to visit.

  • Medicare accepts sales tax reporting using A9270 but no reimbursement.

  • Ensuring exact match between claim data and beneficiary card information; 3 necessary elements; office policies.

  • Vision insurance and medical diagnoses; billing exams and codes to vision insurance vs. additional tests for medical problems to medical insurance; same day OK.

  • Coding only 1 procedure for each IOL patient; NCCI rules regarding reporting 76519 and 92136 together; double RVUs for IOL calculation in both eyes on 2 lines; use modifiers to split work with surgeon.

  • How to get paid for chalazion removal and an E/M visit on the same day.

  • Protecting PHI with de-identification; what HIPAA considers identifying information; clip and save chart for reference.

  • HIPAA: To eliminate PHI mishaps, communicate with staff; guidance to protect patients' health information.

  • Visual field examinations: One crucial thing you must have in your documentation to get the reimbursement you deserve.

  • Little known secrets to getting paid for refractions.

In order for you to meet this requirement, you must have the revised CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM codes in your possession before the above implementation dates.

The best way to do this is to order your coding resources early.

Review additional coding resources.
